13.15.1 :-) Anthony
There is one feature that no matter how much you debate you must agree on is TIMELY RESPONSE.
F2F allows for immediate feedback. It allows you to here
about various matters immediately. It allows you to set up appointments with your professors. If
you disagree with something you can speak on it right then and
get feedback. F2F allows for sponteniety. As the professor if you find that things should shift
in a class discussion you can with immediate results. Discussions are
impromptu and you get a variety of responses at that moment. You are able to put the face with the
response. Face it there are times when you need to ask a
question and you need an answer right now not a day later, F2F offers you this.
There is no reason why I or anyone "must agree" ... literally F2F feeback may be immediate,
but that hardly equates to actually having value. As has been presented
here already, the immediate response is less likely to be correct than the one thoughtout. What
my experience at university has taught me most is that the
person in the front of the room isn't as much an expert on the topic as they are a person doing a
job. The best professors I've had have been in working adult
programs because their day jobs were in their fields and thus worked with the topic in real time
on a daily basis. That's not to say my full time professors were
dummies, but there is no guarantee that the answer coming from them is the right one (except on
their test). And, I'm not F2F with that professor for all the hours
that I will be putting into the classroom. Once or twice a week depending on the schedule of the
class I will be F2F ... out of the classroom what am I going to do?
I'm going online to communicate with them or I'm waiting outside their office hoping they stick
to their office hours. Finally, this premise does not apply in my opinion
on whether online or traditional classrooms are superior. It is an evaluation of whether or not
a professor is superior or should be seeking other employment. Don't
think I don't know where y'all are coming from, I'm still waiting on responses to some ofmy posts
in the conference area from Professor Huelsmann. Timely doesn't
equate to instant, the rest of the professors responded to my inquiries with 12 hours at most and
one exception was within 24 ... however, I could have just as easily
have called them and had an instant response. But that doesn't have to do with anything as far as
DE goes. The flexibility wins out for me. Normally, I'm too busy
during the work week to participate after hours ... this week my boss is on travel and the assignments
I have were completed next week. My responsibilities are
limited to answering email and phone calls until a tasking is assigned to us and to process any
responses to the big project I sent out for endorsement at the end
of last week. Because we're online I can participate and maximise my time so that tonight instead
of having to log on and catch up with todays discourse, I can go
see a movie instead.
