Lisa,

You do not explain if those students you contacted had already had their grade. If you were the only one who did not have a grade, I would understand your concern. I would think that your situation was the exception.

Even with face-to-face classes, grades are not always returned promptly. Other than seeing the professor in class (if there is time to talk then), you have to catch the professor during their office hours (if they aren't in a meeting), or play telephone tag. I know a student who still waiting for a research paper from a professor for a course she completed last fall. She has called and visited the professor's office numerous times. It seems it could be much more problematic for face-to-face students. At least online students have a designated system of communication. You don't have to physically chase the professor!

Only one student responded to my email and they had received their grade. At least seeing the professor in the traditional classroom increased my chances of having contact. I could spend all day sending emails trying to get a response from a professor to no avail. They have the choice of answering when they wish. The unknown is greater with communication during online discussions.

This is still a failing of the professor though and not a failure of DE. It's like that old adage (with my own personal twist) ... you can lead a horse to water and tie his head below the surface, but you can't make 'em drink or drowned. This is why we get to evaluate the professors that teach us. So that the ones who do not provide a quality service can be weeded out. While it may be hard to see, from what I've read student evaulations of their instructors is being taken very seriously. As well you can write the Dean and complain to them as well. Something you may want to wait for the semester to end before you do though ... professors are just as human as the rest of us and revenge through grading is not as unlikely as the body of professors would like to believe.

I agree with you on this Anthony. You could talk to a professor face to face or online everyday for a week and still not get any results. Either way you have communicated with him/her effectvely. The results depend directly on the professor, not the form of communication.
