While it's true that text-based discourse lacks the body language cues that verbal discourse has, that is not in itself a legitimate reason to choose one over the other. This is solved by the author of the text taking time to clearly and concisely convey their intent as well as the context of their message. Sloppy and poor writing will no more transmit a clear message than misspoken verbal discourse.
