15.5.4 :-) Linda
Jennifer and Cynthia,
I have had many foreign exchange students in my classes who would not ask a question
in class. It was consideredimproper or disrespectful for their cultural
background. Also, they could not understand the non-verbal communication associatedwith the verbal because
of the cultural differences. So face-to-face does not
necessarily provide clarity for ESL (English assecondary language) students.

My non-native
students feel most comfortable talking with me after class or in my
office;many of them often take advantage of email communication to clear any confusion. For example,
I have one student from China inmy Monday evening class.
Thispast Monday, I explained what will be on the final exam, reviewed all the concepts to be included
onthe exam, and asked many, many times if anyone had any
further questions. The next day, I had two emails from this student withquestions about the exam.

Online communication can be an equalizer for cultural
differences.
