I would like to suggest that what occurs in online discussions is a reduction in the spontaneous
automatic response to a statement, rather than an increase in
honesty. Online discussions do give people the opportunity to reflect on what they will say rather
than regretting what they have spontaneously spoken out about.
However, are we more honest or just more careful?
Well ... if you look at someone's unsaid comments as lies of ommission, then yes online could be seen
as more honest. I would say that instead of honest that
online discourse is more open.

Openness or honesty? I would have to agree to a point that individuals maybe more open in online discussion. However,
when someone is behind a computer screen
and never has to meet the other individuals he/she iscorresponding with, why not speak honestly? I would
have to say personally, my communication online is much
moreopen and honest than in person.

Let's not concentrate solely on truth versus falsehood ... as I stated, a lie by omission. That's
not literally an untruth or necessarily a dishonest action (except maybe
with your spouse and they ask if a certain piece of clothing looks good ... that's lying for survival.).
My point about open being a more appropriate term relates to
silence versus participation. The relatively safety felt in front of a monitor over looking someone
in the eye can help some participate more than they would otherwise. In
the end I don't see there being a conclusion for or against DE or F2F. Both are viable methods of education
and should continue to exist ... the strengths of each
applying the individual needs of both he professor and student. I'd like to teach during my declining
years and preferably via satellite from small Caribbean island I buy
with my ill-gotten gains of a life well-lived. ;)
